Character in the MakingSample

Are you over it?
I was invited to a party that really got out of hand. The drinks were free, the night kept getting longer, and the guests got more and more tipsy. Since I had a tight schedule, I set a limit for myself beforehand and just observed what was happening around me.
The next day, I saw tired faces and heard the phrase that won’t surprise you: “I’m never drinking again!”
What happened? People had too much of what they should’ve had in moderation. And now, they automatically don’t want any more of it. The body rejects it. You feel awful.
This is a healthy protective reaction from the body. It’s crying out. And only by distancing yourself from what’s holding you back can healing begin. You sober up. And hopefully, you set new boundaries so it doesn’t happen again.
What do you need to distance yourself from to start healing? To even begin setting new boundaries?
Maybe it’s taking a break from gossip, distancing yourself from people who aren’t good for you, avoiding movies that negatively influence you, or even stepping back from shopping…
“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other.” (Matthew 6:24 NLT)
Here’s a simple self-test from that Scripture. Just insert whatever you’re overindulging in: “If you’re focused on gossip (for example), you won’t be able to care about the other’s desires.” Or: “If you’re focused on excessive drinking, you won’t be able to care about the other’s desires.” (Matthew 6:24 NLT)
And it’s not just about others’ desires. It’s about the desires God has for your life.
Can I encourage you to take this little nudge seriously today? Because what you think you have under control today can become serious faster than you think.
Take control of your life—and that often starts with taking a step back!
You are a miracle!
