Empty Pockets - the Art of Giving

DAY 4 OF 6

Let’s be real: money influences our daily decisions more than we like to admit. Whether it’s choosing to stay home because we don’t have enough money, skipping a meal, or even missing time with friends because of finances, money is often the hidden force guiding our choices.

But here’s the thing: money itself isn’t bad. Having money—or even lots of it—can be a tool for incredible good. It can change lives, impact communities, and further God’s kingdom. However, it can also lead to selfishness, greed, or harm. The difference between the two is simple: Who is in control?

Money as a Master

Jesus doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to money. In Matthew 6:24, He gives a clear ultimatum:

“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”

Here, Jesus shows us that money can become a master, competing for our devotion. Whoever controls the money—whether that’s us, God, or the money itself—determines how it is used.

Signs Money is Mastering You

How do you know if money is calling the shots in your life? Here are a few signs:

  • It causes you stress.
  • You feel envious of others who have more.
  • You never feel like you have enough.
  • You constantly compare how you and others use money.

This control can feel like an addiction. Think about someone obsessed with a TV show or video game. It’s not just something they enjoy—it’s something they have to do. That’s not freedom.

Real freedom isn’t doing whatever you want; it’s being free from anything that ties you down or controls you. Money, when it becomes our master, robs us of that freedom.

Start Mastering Money Now

Some of you might be thinking, “This isn’t my problem—I don’t have money!” But the truth is, mastering money is a heart issue, not a financial one. If you learn to master your heart when it comes to money now, it will prepare you to use it wisely when you do have it.

Application

  1. Reflect: Ask yourself, “What is my relationship with money like?” Do I feel tied up by it?
  2. Release: Pray and surrender your relationship with money to God. Ask Him to help you trust Him as your provider and guide.
  3. Practice Generosity: Start small. Whether it’s with pocket money, a gift, or your time, begin cultivating a heart of giving.
  4. Set Your Foundation: Commit to mastering money now, not letting it dictate your life. Memorize Matthew 6:24 as a reminder of who should be in control.

When you master money, instead of letting it master you, you open the door for God to use you and your resources for His glory. Start today—whether you have little or much—and watch how God transforms your heart and your finances.
