The Mustard Seed Principle

DAY 2 OF 7

I want to do something big for God… (especially like So-and-So.)

May I suggest an easy way to do it? Plant a mustard seed.

“Oh, but you do not understand! I mean big, really BIG!” Most often, however, we will not say it out loud, but we think it.

Okay, I understand—plant two mustard seeds!

You see, by planting a small mustard seed, you plant a BIG tree! You will have to plant and water it—God will give the growth. And by planting a mustard seed, you will have planted a big tree! This is what is meant by small beginnings.

The mustard seed is also used to explain faith – the effect of even a small amount of faith. A mustard seed of faith can move a mountain—and that is impossible—or is it? The mustard seed can also uproot a mulberry tree. Mulberry trees are big with deep and strong roots—very difficult to uproot. So, if you want to uproot a mulberry tree, plant a mustard seed next to it.

Luke 17:6 (NASB) - “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would obey you.

Somehow, Jesus says, “Let us start small and see how you do with that.” If you cannot handle small, you will not be able to handle big. We pray for millions—but who of us can really handle millions?

Okay, let me make it a bit easier: plant big trees. You do that by planting mustard seeds!

“Oh, but I want to see the results!”

Fair enough, but that reveals your heart. You most likely suffer from the sin of comparison or want to make yourself look better.

If you can plant one mustard seed and wait—even if you do not see any fruit—you have already done something significant.

Asking God for a mustard seed is asking God for a big tree—this is already a big ask.

I have failed many times when I started with ‘big”.

Nowadays, I only ask the Lord for one more mustard seed. I have decided to make it a bit more difficult for God: He needs to bring me the seed, the person, the opportunity, etc.

But, lo and behold, it is working. The only problem is that we often feel God is just so "slow!" However, the mistakes are far fewer, and “we” (God and I) go much faster this way, especially Him.

Don’t despise the day of small beginnings—the days of the mustard seed.

About this Plan

The Mustard Seed Principle

In several situations, Jesus referred to the mustard seed. Faith is like a mustard seed, and the mustard seed is something small that will grow into "a big tree." This concept is fascinating, and it has changed my life and approach to my work and involvement in the kingdom of God. I know it will do the same for you.
