How to Read the Gospel of MarkSample

Living the kingdom, here, now!
Be on your guard! Be alert! – Mark 13:32 (NIV)
In Mark’s gospel, almost every instruction Jesus gave to his disciples relates directly to our participation in the kingdom now!
1. These are the instructions Jesus gave us about the kingdom of heaven he has established on earth …
The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news (Mark 1:15-NIV).
Follow me (Mark 2:13-NIV).
Listen! (Mark 4:13-NIV).
Consider carefully what you hear, with the measure you use it will be measured to you (Mark 4:24-25-NIV).
Take nothing for the journey except a staff – no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra tunic. Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave as a testimony against them (Mark 6:8-11-NIV).
If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me (Mark 8:34-NIV).
And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins (Mark 11:25-NIV).
Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s (Mark 12:17-NIV).
Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned (Mark 16:15-16-NIV).
2. These are the instructions Jesus gave us about how we must wait for his return …
Watch out that no one deceives you (Mark 13:5-NIV).
Do not be alarmed (Mark 13:7-NIV).
You must be on your guard (Mark 13:9-NIV).
Whenever you are arrested (for believing in Jesus) and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say (Mark 13:11-NIV).
He who stands firm to the end will be saved (Mark 13:13-NIV).
Do not believe the false claims about Christ’s return (Mark 13:21-NIV).
Be on your guard (Mark 13:23-NIV).
Be on your guard! Be alert! (Mark 13:32-NIV)
Keep watch (Mark 13:35-NIV).
Watch (Mark 13:37-NIV).
We could summarise all these as …
Repent … Believe … Follow … Listen …Consider carefully … Love …
Take up your cross and follow Jesus … Watch … Keep alert … Be on your guard … Take the gospel of the kingdom to all the world.

About this Plan

The Gospel of Mark reads as Peter’s eyewitness account of Jesus’ ministry. This plan will give us the chance to encounter Jesus in the way that the apostle Peter encountered Jesus. Mark’s gospel is short. It is focused. Like a feisty bulldog, it reads with a compelling narrative. Its ending is sudden and unexpected. It has been said that it was impossible for Mark to write a boring sentence.
