Trapped on the Toilet Table? God Has Turned the Tables for You!

DAY 8 OF 8

God Is Able To Turn the Tables!

The phrase ‘the tables have turned’ is used as an expression to state how something has happened that has taken someone from a place of disadvantage to a place of advantage.

Christians recognise that God has turned the tables for us. He has brought us out of the kingdom of darkness into his kingdom of light. We live with the assurance that we are adopted into his family. We are part of our father's family feast forever.

I want to end this plan by bringing a reminder of how blessed we are to have our feet under God’s table. Challenging things happen in all of our lives and it's easy to be distracted from our purpose - to love God wholeheartedly and to love and serve others. I know I'm often guilty of forgetting my privileged position.

The challenge I want to end this devotional with is for us to check our table manners. There’s a risk that we become very familiar with God's table. Perhaps over the years, we have lost focus on how blessed we are to be amongst God’s divine diners.

Table manners checklist:

Phones - Our phones have so much power for good, but let’s ensure we are in control of them and they are not distracting us from our relationship with God and the other people around the table. Ban them from the table if you need to!

Clicking our fingers - Are we just sitting expecting to be waited on? Or are we following God's example and rolling up our sleeves in service?

Elbows on the table - Perhaps we’ve got a bit lazy and we need to sit upright again, adjusting our posture to enable us to remember our blessed position.

Napkins - Are we practicing spiritual disciplines that can help with our holiness and protect our royal robes? Are we praying, serving, studying the Word, meeting with other believers? When the stains inevitably occur, are we asking God to wash them back to bright white?

Pull up a chair - Are we engaging in conversation with others, showing genuine care and interest in people’s lives? Are we ensuring that we are making an effort to pull up a chair to help another person find their place at God’s table?

Reflection

Which of the table manners do you most need to work on? It’s the phone and the elbows for me!

About this Plan

Trapped on the Toilet Table? God Has Turned the Tables for You!

Inspired by ‘the toilet table’ in a popular British sitcom, this plan is themed around different tables from both modern culture and the Bible. It examines what it’s like having your feet firmly planted under God’s table. God’s table is one where all are welcomed and all can find community, joy, forgiveness, and feasting. Each daily devotion is a tale of two tables - one which doesn’t represent God’s table well, and one which strongly does. If you don’t like the table you are currently sitting at, be encouraged that God is able to turn the tables!
