Jesus is Truth

In this powerful exchange with the religious leaders, Jesus reveals a deep truth about who He is and what He offers. He says, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31–32). Later, He declares, “Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58), boldly identifying Himself as eternal—one with God.

Jesus doesn’t just claim to know truth; He is the truth. And He offers true freedom—not just from external bondage, but from the power of sin and spiritual blindness. This freedom is found by abiding in His word—staying rooted in Scripture, believing it, and letting it shape how we live.

In the early days of my walk with God, I stayed close to the Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. I couldn’t get enough of Jesus’ words and actions. But as I grew in my faith, I began to realize how the entire Bible, including the Old Testament, points to Christ. The more I read, the more I saw Jesus in Genesis, Exodus, the Psalms, the prophets—He was everywhere.

One phrase I heard in seminary stuck with me: “The whole Bible for the whole world.” That’s the kind of approach we need. When we commit ourselves to all of God’s Word, we grow in our understanding of Jesus—not just in what He said, but who He is from beginning to end.

Jesus invites us not just to know about Him, but to abide in Him. That’s where true freedom begins—when His Word takes root in our hearts and changes how we live.

Respond to God’s Word:

Take one step this week to abide in His Word: commit to memorizing John 8:36—“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Write it down, repeat it daily, and let it sink deep into your heart. As you do, ask God to show you more of who Jesus is and the freedom He offers through His truth.
