Journey Through Exodus 20-40Sample

Journey Through Exodus 20-40

DAY 6 OF 14

National Covenant Formalized: In Front of the Text

As we try to recalibrate our thinking about laws and “The Law,” consider the following phrases that we probably assume originate in the New Testament.

Covenant Signs Continue

The New Testament introduces us to a measure of liberty with respect to particular laws in the Old Covenant, including both circumcision and Sabbath observance. However, there is a spiritual dimension to each sign that is grounded in Old Covenant teaching and still essential to New Covenant living. Read the following passages and write a brief summary of what is binding on Christians today.

“Circumcision of the heart” (Romans 2:25-29 in light of Deuteronomy 10:16; 30:6; Jeremiah 4:4)

“Sabbath rest” (Hebrews 3:7–4:11 in light of what you know so far about the Sabbath in Genesis 2:3 and Exodus 20:8-11)

It is not uncommon for people who have a deeply emotional experience with God, say at a retreat, to struggle in the wake of that encounter. Have you had such an experience? Why do you think you might struggle more with idols after a dramatic experience with God?

Wrap up

Nicole wraps up this lesson on our covenant with God which continues today.
