Luke Book Study - TheStory

DAY 32 OF 96

Hearing and "Hearing"

The people who listened to Jesus telling the parable of the sower were a mixed crowd (v 4). We can imagine them, some hanging on to every word, others not sure what to make of this charismatic man. Some were skeptical but curious nonetheless. Some heard but didn't really "hear."

Jesus uses parables because people who want to follow him will get the point. Others won't.

But there's more. Those who understand are to pass on his message. The Jews of the Old Testament had failed over and over again to do this, thinking that as the "chosen people," God was revealing himself just to them. As we are drawn to Jesus and receive his light, we are to share it openly so others can find him, too.

It matters how we listen. The seed is living, and if it is nurtured in good soil, it will grow and develop.

At the end of this passage, Jesus’ mother and brothers wanted to see him (v 20). Jesus responded by introducing his “extended family”—people who listen to God’s word and do what it says (v 21). Imagine having that close a relationship with Jesus. We can!

Respond in Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Give me the courage to lift you up so that others may be drawn to you. In your powerful name, I pray. Amen.
