Clothed In Compassion

What does a follower of Christ look like? The Word is clear: we aren’t defined by our perfect theology or list of credentials. Christianity isn’t about how well we can argue a point or how many times we can prove our opinions are best. A true follower of Christ represents the characteristics of God’s love. We are called to embody Christ’s love rather than adhere to our own stringent set of beliefs.

There is nothing wrong with seeking the truth, but if we miss the power and place of God’s love along the way, we miss the point entirely. If we focus on being right all the time, we risk overlooking the simple reality of the gospel. God’s love is far more powerful than any one theological discussion. Laying our lives down for each other matters more than making sure all of our opinions line up.

We are meant to follow Christ in word and deed. In other words, our day-to-day interactions with other people should be a higher priority than making sure they agree with us. We can clothe ourselves in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. These characteristics don’t always come naturally which is why we need the grace of God. We need him to equip us and strengthen us. Our dependence upon him should result in our hearts being shaped more and more into his likeness.

As you seek to reflect Christ to others, God will give you a greater sense of compassion. As you begin to view people through his eyes, you will see beyond their flaws, struggles, and differing opinions. Through relationship, kindness, and reconciliation, you can serve people with the love of Jesus. You can set aside your desire to be right and simply love people because God loves them.
