Greatness: Matthew 14-20Sample

Greatness: Matthew 14-20

DAY 21 OF 64

Marriage is a covenant designed by God, a reflection of Christ’s relationship with His Church (Ephesians 5:25–32, ESV). Yet, in a broken world, many marriages face challenges, and some tragically end in divorce. Scripture speaks to this reality with both truth and grace.

In Matthew 19:9, Jesus teaches that infidelity is grounds for divorce. However, the Bible also calls for wisdom and compassion, especially in situations where safety is at risk (Psalm 82:4, ESV). While we must uphold the sanctity of marriage, it is crucial to recognise God’s heart for justice and protection for the vulnerable.

As the Church, our response to divorce should mirror Christ’s love. Jesus warns against judgment in Matthew 7:1–5, emphasising the call to love others. Instead of condemnation, we are to reflect grace and restoration (Galatians 6:1–2, ESV). This means avoiding gossip, favoritism, or exclusion—actions that can wound deeply. Instead, we are to welcome and care for those experiencing divorce, reflecting God’s compassion.

Marriage is a sacred bond, but it is not without challenges. External pressures like illness, family, and work can strain even the strongest marriages. That is why the Church must stand as a community that upholds and nurtures marriages while providing support to those who face marital struggles or separation.

Let us pray fervently for the marriages around us, seeking God’s strength and wisdom. Let us also be a people who encourage, uplift, and walk alongside others, whether to strengthen their marriage or support them through its trials. In doing so, we model Christ’s love and grace to a hurting world.

Today, ponder this: How can you encourage and support others to build a godly marriage? Where could you lend your time, efforts, words and love to encourage someone who is married today?
