Greatness: Matthew 14-20Sample

Do you know how small a mustard seed is? It is between 1 and 2 millimetres. Mustard plants were considered a weed by many in Jerusalem because of how common they were.
In today’s passage, a father comes to Jesus, desperate for Him to heal his demon-possessed son. The child was suffering miserably, and the father was pleading for help. The disciples had failed to cast the demon out, so he came to Jesus.
Jesus tells His disciples, “If you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you” (Matthew 17:20, ESV). Jesus takes the tiny, common mustard seed and shows that faith of similar size and stature can do great things.
There are many things we might bring to God in prayer: healing, employment, reconciliation, direction in life, and more. In these prayers for great, big things, Jesus tells us that we only require the faith of a mustard seed to see Him move. Do we approach prayer with that small but life-changing faith?
Whatever you need prayer for, pull out the mustard seed and pray with the faith you have, no matter if it feels small. And feel free to use the prayer the father in this passage prayed: “I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24, ESV).
Today, ponder this: How is your prayer life? What are you trusting God for? Do you believe He can answer your prayers?
