God Rescues the Godly and Punishes False Teachers
You can hear about something bad and be moved by it. You can hear about something treacherous someone does and genuinely be empathic. You can hear about someone being deceived and long for them to hear truth. You can say that you know God is righteous and just.
We can hear, say, or believe all these things to be true, but experiencing them for ourselves is a whole different story. We need to be alert to false teachers because they will genuinely be present and they most certainly will be convincing enough to warrant this warning in scripture. The passage doesn't say, "But dummies who try to bring a false message will pop up and you'll see right through them....". It says that MANY will follow. And truly, the condemnation that they bring with them by association is real and alive, and the destruction they leave in their wake is active and hurtful. It's one thing to talk about it and it's a whole separate thing to humbly ask the Lord to help you guard your heart, to recognize that your mind is as susceptible to believe false truths as anyone elses.
Also, can we take a moment to be incredibly grateful for a God who is just? We know He is just, we know He is good - we can share those truths easily and willingly. But we must remember that He separates Himself from all sin and all forms of destruction, including that committed by the angels He created solely to worship and serve Him. We should be spurred to praise Him for His goodness and worship Him for His mercy that a way for us, through His Son Jesus.
We might see the words "false teacher" and turn our minds off. Surely we wouldn't fall prey and they are so far removed from us anyway, right? But are they? And are our hearts tender enough and humble enough to stay guarded, with our eyes on the Lord so we don't get trampled in their wake? And how does this picture of God's justice move us TODAY? Are we encouraged? Are we stirred? Are we cold and numb to the fact of His Holiness?
Lord, move us and keep us close.
