Why Do You Cry?

In 1625, Sir Francis Bacon wrote, “A sudden, bold, and unexpected question doth many times surprise a man, and lay him open.” A well-timed question can catch you off guard and make you feel vulnerable. When God poses a question, it can reveal the deepest parts of your soul, bringing wholeness and healing.

After Jesus’ death, Mary and the disciples were in deep despair. Despite His predictions of His death and resurrection, they were stunned by His crucifixion. All hope seemed lost.

Early on the first day of the week, Mary went to Jesus’ tomb with embalming oils and spices. She was horrified to find the stone moved and Jesus’ body gone. In a panic, she told Peter and John, who later confirmed the tomb was empty. Devastated, Mary stayed behind, weeping. As she turned to leave, she saw a man who asked, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”

Mary didn’t recognize Him at first, thinking He was the gardener. But when He called her by name, she knew it was Jesus. She exclaimed, “Teacher!” and fell at His feet in worship. Hearing Jesus speak her name removed her doubt, fear, and confusion. Her hope returned; He was alive!

“Why are you crying?” Was this a gentle question asking Mary why she hadn’t believed what she had been told throughout Jesus’ ministry? He had promised His followers many times that He would be executed and rise again, yet He found her weeping and in despair. Was this a marker to her heart that what Jesus said could be trusted?

“Who are you looking for?” Again, could this be a loving wake-up call? Why was Mary looking for Jesus among the dead when He had promised He would return after His death? Perhaps this could be another reminder of the faith we can have in what He says to us, even in the darkest of circumstances. He keeps His promises.

Spiritual dialogues begin with hearing God’s voice and responding to His call, and a personal encounter with God gives life new meaning. Have you been transformed by the voice, love, and power of your Savior? He’s calling your name, asking questions to remind you of who He is. He’s waiting for you with open arms. Run to Him!
