Made to worship
In Genesis, we read the story of Abraham, who sends his servant to find a wife for Isaac. The servant meets Rebekah, whose actions answer the servant’s prayer. The man bows low and worships the Lord. ‘Praise the Lord, the God of my master Abraham.’ God has shown unfailing love and faithfulness; God has provided, even as He has blessed. The servant’s heart is full of thanksgiving. The Lord led him to exactly where and when he needed to be.
CS Lewis suggests that ‘It is in the process of being worshipped that God communicates His presence to men.’ AW Tozer states that ‘… man was made to worship God’. In the recognition of the presence of God, we see that we are reliant on His grace. Worship proves our deep gratitude for all that God has done and is doing for His love and His provision.
In John’s Gospel we are told to worship ‘in Spirit and in truth’. It is the deep heart of us calling out to our creator God in whose image we are made. As deep calls to deep, we open ourselves to Him in celebration. ‘Let us kneel to our maker,’ the Psalmist sings, ‘For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand’ (v7 ESV).
Worship is our heartbeat. It’s the life that courses through our veins, and it’s the celebration of who God is that brings about our response of submission, adoration, and exaltation. Lord, we cry out, You are Worthy, You are Holy, You alone are Sovereign. Amen.
