To the Ends of the Earth: Devotions in Acts Part 1

DAY 4 OF 8

Day 4 | Acts 4: Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin

In Acts 4, Peter and John face the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council, after healing the lame man. Despite the threat of persecution, they boldly proclaim the resurrection of Jesus. Their courage is a direct result of being filled with the Holy Spirit. The Sanhedrin is astonished by their boldness, recognising that these uneducated men have been with Jesus.

The early church responds to this opposition with prayer, asking for even more boldness to speak God's word. Their prayer is answered as the place is shaken, and they are filled with the Holy Spirit again. This chapter highlights the importance of prayer and unity in the face of opposition. The believers are not deterred by threats; instead, they are emboldened to continue their mission.

The response of the early church to persecution is a powerful example of faith in action. Instead of retreating in fear, they gather together to pray and seek God's guidance. Their unity and commitment to prayer demonstrate the strength of their community and their reliance on God. It challenges us to consider how we respond to challenges in our own lives. Do we turn to God in prayer and seek His strength, or do we rely on our own abilities? The early church's example encourages us to trust in God's power and to stand firm in our faith.

The Big Idea

A key point of Acts 4 is the boldness and resilience of the early church in the face of persecution. The disciples' courage comes from the Holy Spirit, and their response to opposition is to pray for even more boldness, demonstrating the power of prayer and unity.

Consider

How do you respond to challenges and opposition? Do you retreat in fear, or do you stand firm in faith? Reflect on the areas where you need to pray for boldness. Ask God to fill you with His Spirit, so you can stand firm and be a light in the darkness. Pray for courage to speak the truth in love, trusting that God is with you in every situation.

An Interesting Note

The Sanhedrin was the highest Jewish council and court in Jerusalem, composed of religious leaders, including Pharisees and Sadducees. It held significant power and authority over Jewish religious and civil matters, but was significantly limited in its power by the Roman authorities. The boldness of Peter and John before such a powerful body highlights the transformative impact of the Holy Spirit, enabling them to speak with authority and confidence despite their lack of formal education.
