How to Taste and See God's Goodness: Practical Ways for Your Family to Experience God's Presence and Notice His Daily Blessings

DAY 3 OF 3

The past few days, we’ve talked about tasting and seeing God’s goodness—especially in tough circumstances.

But it’s not always easy.

Thankfully, the Bible doesn't pretend it is.

King David—the same one who wrote "Taste and see that the Lord is good"—wrestled too. Throughout his life, we see David cry out in desperation, lament losses, and still choose to trust God's goodness.

David knew what it meant to taste and see God’s goodness in all climates.

In desert places. Green pastures. And darkest valleys.

He found God in still waters and in battlefields.

In feasts—and even in the presence of enemies.

God’s goodness is for every place, every day.

But how can you taste and see it—especially when life feels more like wilderness than a feast?

1. Practice Before the Storm

Can you imagine trying to learn to swim while you're drowning? That's not the best time for your first butterfly stroke.

The same is true spiritually. When you’re barely keeping your head above water, it’s hard to learn new rhythms of tasting and seeing God's goodness.

That's why now—in ordinary days—is the time to practice.

  • Make noticing His goodness a daily habit.
  • Train your heart to look for His hand in small things.
  • Taste often. See often. Cultivate the skill of finding Him in small daily ways, so when the floodwaters rise, you know where to look.

2. Watch What You Consume

What we consume shapes what we crave.

Snack on sugar all day and you’ll crave more. Feast on bad news, empty distractions, or negative self-talk, and you’ll fill up on stuff that doesn’t satisfy.

So feast on God's Word. Surround yourself with reminders of His faithfulness. Train your tastebuds toward Him.

The more you look for God, the more you’ll notice Him.

3. Check Your Expectations

God doesn't just do good things—He is good.

His care for you and your family isn't random kindness. It's an overflow of His nature: unchanging, powerful, faithful, and eternally true.

But here's the tension: God's goodness doesn't always look the way we wish it would.

Sometimes it’s like my kids’ morning vitamins—packed with what they need, but far less exciting than donuts.

Sometimes He works good through hard circumstances—not by removing the trouble, but by sustaining us inside it.

This is actually incredibly good news:

God’s goodness isn’t fragile.

It doesn’t break under pressure.

He’s not undone by pain, injustice, or even death.

He is strong enough—and good enough—to work even the hardest things for our ultimate good.

So Get Your Hopes Up—for the Right Things

My mom passed away from cancer in 2023.

My sons were 4 and 8. Her diagnosis came only two months before she entered heaven.

Of course, we prayed for healing. We asked God for miracles. And we asked for His greatest grace for her, even if that looked different than what we wanted.

God met our family in those heartbreaking days. He kept every promise, to us and to her.

  • He was with us in the valley of death.
  • He was our comfort, our peace, our good Shepherd.
  • He didn't stop being good just because life got hard.

Friend, whatever season you’re in—green pastures, deep valleys, or desert places—God is still there and He brings all His goodness with Him.

So slow down.
Taste often.
Look carefully, asking God to help you see.
Let God grow your appetite for Him.

And know this: God's goodness and love are for you and your children, all the days of your lives.

Kid Connection: Wonder This

“In the Bible, David said God's goodness follows us every day of our lives. If you could see God's goodness following you, what do you think it would look like? Like a shadow that never leaves? A teammate playing with you in every game? A bodyguard making sure you’re safe? A bright light showing you where to go? That’s cool. Why?”
