What Is a Christian? With Francis Chan: A 6-Day Devotional RightNow Media StudySample

Day 4: Who is Jesus?
When you think of Jesus, what words and images come to mind? Do you think of Him as a man? As God? As a friend or savior? Something different? In today’s devotional, Francis introduces us to Jesus as He’s presented in the Scriptures—as our incredible and complex Savior. The time and effort it takes to know Him deeply will enrich our lives here and in eternity.
Day 4 Question and Answer
Who is Jesus?
Jesus is fully God, the second Person of the Trinity, who became fully human to give Himself as a sacrifice on our behalf, ushering in the kingdom of God. Through His death and resurrection, He saves those who believe in and follow Him from the power of sin and death.
Reflect
In John 1:1–4, John wants readers to remember the creation story and realize that Jesus—God the Son—was there, participating in the creation of everything. He’s saying this man, Jesus, is the same God you’ve been worshipping all along! How does John 1 impact the way you understand Jesus?
The Word of God who created the world became a human being. Read John 1:14. That God the Son took on a physical body, having both a divine nature and a human nature is amazing and mysterious. How do you respond to the mystery that God the Son took on a human nature?
Because Jesus took on humanity, He is qualified to be our substitute. Because He is divine, He is perfect, sinless, and pure—the kind of sacrifice acceptable to God. Because He loves us, He died for us. What emotions does it stir in you when you consider Jesus’s willingness to sacrifice Himself for you?
Respond
Jesus is and forever will be God the Son, the second Person of the Trinity. As the one through whom all things were created, He is the object of our love and worship. And as the Savior who sacrificed Himself on our behalf, He is worthy of our devotion, our thanks, and our lives. Because of Him, we have eternal life now and forever. So, spend time talking with Him, studying His life and words, and telling others about Him.
Today, spend some time reading and re-reading Colossians 1:15–17, working to commit it to memory.
