DAY 18 OF 28

Reading the Bible can feel intimidating sometimes. But one simple way of studying Scripture is called S.O.A.P. It stands for "Scripture," "Observation," "Application," and "Prayer." We'll show you how—it's easy!

S: Scripture

If you haven't already, read today's passage of Scripture. Then summarize it in your own words.

O: Observation

Read Colossians 1:13–14 again.

  • How would you summarize its message?
  • What words or ideas do you have questions about?
  • Based on this passage, what would you say is the point of Jesus rescuing us?

A: Application

What is a way you feel stuck in darkness right now?

Think about some of the bigger words in this passage, like dominion, kingdom, and redemption. Who or what could help you define them for better understanding?

Jesus is here for us in all things, but one way he rescues us is through forgiveness. What's a way you've experienced or want to experience this forgiveness?

P: Prayer

Spend some time in prayer about a way you've felt stuck in darkness. This could be asking for help in a current situation you're in or thanking God for the gift of light in the past. Ask for forgiveness for anything in your life right now you feel is keeping you in the dark, and talk to God about ways you can better experience and share God's light.

About this Plan

Another Look

Have you ever had a conversation that opened your eyes to something you’d never thought about before? Or maybe someone asked you a simple question that completely shifted your perspective. Words have the power to change everything, and that’s never been more true than with Jesus. He asked questions that changed people’s perspectives and caused them to take another look at themselves, their lives, and what they believed about God. In this 4-week devotional series from Grow Curriculum, we’ll take a look at some big questions Jesus asked.
