Family by Choice: God’s Heart for Family Beyond Biology

DAY 2 OF 5

Esther – Raised by a Relative, Called for a Purpose

“Now there was in the citadel of Susa a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, named Mordecai son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, who had been carried into exile from Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, among those taken captive with Jehoiachin king of Judah. Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, whom he had brought up because she had neither father nor mother. This young woman, who was also known as Esther, had a lovely figure and was beautiful. Mordecai had taken her as his own daughter when her father and mother died.” (Esther 2:5-7)

Esther lost both of her parents at a young age, leaving her without the security of a traditional family. But she was not alone—her cousin Mordecai stepped in, raising her with love, wisdom, and faith. He became her protector and mentor, helping her stay grounded in her Jewish heritage. Mordecai’s care and guidance shaped Esther’s character and faith, preparing her for a future she never could have imagined. When the time came, she was chosen as Queen of Persia—positioning her to save her people from destruction.

Kinship caregivers—relatives who step up to care for children—play a crucial role in providing family-based care. Nearly 30% of children in the foster care system are placed with relatives, providing them a sense of familiarity and stability during a difficult transition.

However, kinship caregivers often face unique challenges, including financial strain and a lack of formal support. By offering resources, encouragement, and community, we can help these families thrive and fulfill the calling God has placed on their lives.

Mordecai stepped up in Esther’s time of need, and God changed the world through her. Who knows what God has in store for the children still waiting for a family?

Call to Action:

Do you know someone caring for a relative’s child? Reach out with encouragement, practical support, or prayer. If you are able, consider donating to organizations that provide resources and services for kinship caregivers. Even small gestures of support can make a lasting difference for families who are stepping in to care for children in need.

Prayer:

Father, we lift up every relative who has stepped in to care for a child in need. Strengthen them, guide them, and equip them with the love, patience, and resources they need to provide a stable, nurturing home. Bless their commitment, and use their care to bring healing and hope. Amen.

About this Plan

Family by Choice: God’s Heart for Family Beyond Biology

Family is more than shared DNA—it is built on love, commitment, and the willingness to say, “I choose you.” Throughout the Bible, we see powerful examples of children raised outside their biological families—yet they are loved, nurtured, and called by God for a purpose. Scripture shows us that family is not just about birth, but about choice. For those considering foster care, adoption, or other forms of family care, this devotional explores how God’s heart for chosen families is woven into His plan of redemption—and how we are called to care for children in need of family.
