Your Spiritual Check-Up Using the 10 Commandments

DAY 1 OF 12

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12–13, ESV)

You are about to go on a journey of self-awareness and self-reflection using the Bible as your guide to answer the common questions we ask each other all of the time - “How are you doing?” If you are in Australia, you will say it this way - “How are you going?” I like the Australian version better because how you are going is going to determine how you are doing.

Hebrews 4:12-13 tells us that the word of God gets to our heart and reveals the intentions of our heart. For the writer of Hebrews, they were primarily referring to what was contained in the Hebrew Scriptures, what we commonly refer to as The Old Testament.

We are going to walk through the Ten Commandments to allow the word of God to reveal the thoughts and intentions of our heart. I strongly encourage you to invite at least one other person to walk with you because this isn’t a one-time exercise, it is a lifestyle of awareness, acknowledgement, confession and surrender. We need to do this in community. (James 5:16) As you begin each day’s devotion I would encourage you to pray the simple prayer below.

Questions to Consider

- How open are you to growing in your awareness of how you are going in your life?

- What do you hope to get out of this plan that will help you have a more intimate relationship with God?

Actions to Take

- Ask a friend to join you in this plan.

- Write down in a journal or notes app what the Holy Spirit is showing you as you work through the plan.

Prayer to Make

Lord Jesus Christ, I submit to Holy Spirit to open my spiritual eyes to show me how I am going so I can bring greater glory to Father God. Holy Spirit, speak to me and give me a discerning spirit. Amen.

Day 2

About this Plan

Your Spiritual Check-Up Using the 10 Commandments

The words of the Bible help keep us on the right path with God. In this plan you will use the Ten Commandments to do a self-check on your life to discern how well you are on the path and corrections you need to make. The goal isn’t legalistic perfection. The goal is a heart that loves God more fully and loves others. “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” (1 John 5:3, ESV)
