Seven Minutes With Jesus for Men: Applying the Gospel of John to Everyday LifeSample

When John the Baptist announced a second time that Jesus was the Lamb of God, two disciples stopped following John the Baptist and started following Jesus. The first name these disciples called Jesus was Rabbi, which means “teacher.” To follow Jesus, we must submit ourselves to a student/teacher relationship. Jesus is the Master Teacher. He instructs us as we listen and learn.
This is what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. “Disciple” originates from the Greek word mathétés, as used in the New Testament. In its simplest form, it means "a learner." To disciple someone means to help them progressively learn the Word of God and practically live it out in their daily life. God wants to help you learn what it means to grow as a Christian. As you follow His example, Jesus will teach you to become more like Him.
When Andrew found his brother, Simon, he told him, “‘We have found the Messiah,’ which means ‘Christ’” (John 1:41 NLT). It didn’t take Andrew long to learn that Jesus was the Christ, the long-awaited Messiah.
Teacher and Christ are two valuable names for Jesus. He is our Master Teacher and our Messiah. Jesus comes to save us and invites us on a life-long journey to grow as one of His disciples.
More people like the saving nature of Jesus than the teaching aspect. However, when Jesus saves us, then the learning really begins. That is why Jesus refers to salvation as being “born again.” (See John 3:3, 7.)
If you are a father, you know that when your children are born, they still have much growing and learning to do. It takes years for children to develop and mature by listening to and learning from their parents. When Jesus saves you and adopts you into His family, it will also take years of learning for you to mature as a follower of Christ.
Application:
Jesus wants every saved child to become His disciple. How are you listening, learning, growing, and maturing as a follower of Jesus Christ?
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for being my Messiah and Master Teacher. Help me to follow You daily and grow to become all that You desire me to be.
