Led by the Spirit: Journey Through the Book of Acts Part 2

DAY 6 OF 12

Day 6: Against All Odds, The Gospel Advances

In July 2018, a group of 12 Thai boys and their soccer coach survived a harrowing 17-day ordeal after being trapped in a flooded cave in northern Thailand. Against all odds, they were safely evacuated through a global rescue effort. With the cave's narrow passages flooded by heavy rains and having virtually no food supplies, the situation must have felt utterly hopeless for the young boys and their coach. Their rescue was nothing short of a miracle, serving as a reminder that even in the most dire circumstances, perseverance and faith can lead to hope.

A similar story unfolded in Acts 12:1-25, where the early church faced its own impossible challenge. In a period of intense persecution, King Herod had already executed the apostle James (v2) and Peter was next, having been locked in prison under heavy guard (v3-4). At that time, it seemed that their efforts to fulfill the Great Commission were in jeopardy.

Yet, the church did not lose hope but persevered in prayer (v5). We see how God miraculously intervened, sending an angel to free Peter from prison (v7). In a dramatic reversal, Herod met his own downfall, and Scriptures make it clear that this was God's doing (v23). Far from the gospel failing, it continued to spread and thrive. This shows us that God’s purposes occur in unexpected ways, and no person can stop His will from advancing.

Much like the plight of the Thai boys and their coach, the situation in Acts 12 seemed hopeless. Today, we also face our own "impossible" situations - whether in personal struggles, career challenges, or spiritual opposition. We wonder how God can use our impossible situations for His purposes. We question how we can even play a part in advancing the Gospel when we feel like we are down in our own situations.

The real challenge is how we respond while waiting in our own "caves." In the midst of challenges, time can feel like it slows to a standstill, with days dragging on like months and months like years. But our prayers and trust in God are never in vain. He works in His own timing, not ours. Just as the church in Acts prayed with unwavering faith for Peter’s release, we are called to pray with persistence, trusting that God has the power to move mountains to accomplish His purposes.

Reflect:

  • Is there an impossible situation you are facing in your life? Take time to pray over it, believing that God can make a way even where there seems to be no way.
  • God works to advance His gospel even in the most dire of circumstances, even when we cannot perceive it. Pray that God will use your life, both the good and the bad, for His purposes and His glory.

About this Plan

Led by the Spirit: Journey Through the Book of Acts Part 2

What does it mean to live a life when God's Holy Spirit speaks? Following Part 1 of our "Led by the Spirit" devotion, we will now travel through Acts 9-19 and witness how the Holy Spirit continues to work in the life of Paul in extraordinary ways. These devotions will unpack the Spirit’s guidance, bold miracles, and the early disciples' powerful testimony. Learn how you, too, can be a vessel for God’s work and be moved by the same Spirit that ignited the early church.
