Acts 25

Paul is held in prison for two years in the city of Caesarea while the Roman authorities try to work out what to do with him. It is a change of governor that brings it to a head, and Paul once again has to defend himself against the Jewish leaders who want him dead.

As he speaks, he is clear about his faith, wise in his choice of words, and not afraid to call for Justice. In the end, he appeals to Caesar, possibly because he believes it will provide him with safety and a fair trial. As a Roman citizen, he had the right to provocation, where legal decisions could be considered by a higher authority. Paul also wants to preach in the capital city, Rome (Acts 19:21), and perhaps he saw this as an open door to push forward his mission!

As a Christian, you might consider Humility a Godly attribute in the midst of an unjust situation. But Paul’s story also reminds us that we follow a God of Justice. You can speak up for Truth, whether that is for others or for yourself. Jesus said about the Holy Spirit, “he will guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13). You can ask God by His Spirit to show you when to speak and what to say.

And just because you adopt a stand for Justice, doesn’t mean you have to neglect Humility. Seek to live out this threefold calling today, "And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with God" (Micah 6:8).

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Spirit at work in me today, showing me how to speak up for Justice. Amen.
