Little & Leftovers: Stewarding When You Feel Left Out

DAY 3 OF 5

Day 3: Little as Better

In a society that constantly measures success by the amount we have, the idea that "little is better" may seem contradictory. We are often taught that more is better—more wealth, more possessions, more accomplishments, etc. However, Psalm 37:16 offers a radically different perspective on this worldly wisdom: "Better the little that the righteous has than the wealth of many wicked." It not only challenges us to reevaluate our pursuit of success according to the world’s standards, but it also invites us to reflect on what truly matters to us as we journey through life.

At first glance, Psalm 37:16 may appear misaligned. Why would the psalmist say that little is better than abundance? After all, isn’t prosperity something we should desire? Isn’t having more of what we want a form of blessing? The answer to these questions lies in our understanding of the deeper message behind this verse, which is not about comparing wealth or resources themselves but about our relationship to those things.

One thing I appreciate about Psalm 37 is that it doesn’t promote either prosperity or poverty as a guarantee of blessing. It’s not advocating for the pursuit of wealth, yet it’s not encouraging poverty. Instead, the focus is on the source of our provision and our trust in that source. Not on what we have but who gives it to us. Not on the quantity of blessings we receive but the quality of our relationship to the provider, God.

In the context of this verse, the "little" that the righteous have is seen as more valuable because it comes from a place of trust, security, and dependence on God. When we recognize God as our source and our lives align with His will, even the smallest provision is more meaningful and fulfilling than the wealth of the wicked.

It’s no secret that wealth, status, and material success are fleeting. Or that these realities are often accompanied by stress, insecurity, and a never-ending striving for more. The pursuit of wealth, when disconnected from God’s purposes, can result in feelings of desperation and emptiness.

Vain pursuits will have you striving without ever reaching a point of satisfaction. But the contentment and peace that come from knowing God as your provider? Exceeds any temporary satisfaction or fulfillment mere wealth could bring.

Reflection:

  1. Consider how you view, understand, and define blessing. What characterizes a blessing to you? How do you know when you are blessed?
  2. What if blessings aren’t measured by quantity but by their origin? How might contentment be found in the little? What is one way you can cultivate a deeper trust in God as your provider in this season?

Blessing:

In this season, may God open your eyes to the blessing in your little.

May your joy be multiplied in the small things,

and may you see each cup as filled beyond measure.
