The Creator's Purpose: A Model for Creative WorkSample

CHARACTER
KEY POINT:God's character and motivation to serve others was a central focus of His creation. We should do the same as we create.
“Imagination is the voice of daring. If there is anything godlike about God, it is that. He dared to imagine everything” - Henry Miller
Anytime I read this quote, I’m reminded that God took a big risk in adding man to his created order.
After all, in a perfect universe, without any other beings, God would never have to deal with rebellion, sin, or sacrifice.
But He chose to make something that would benefit others more than Himself.
This echo of sacrifice and selflessness we see in creation is one of the most powerful aspects of creativity we carry with us daily.
Our purpose in creating great things in the world should never be entirely selfish.
Don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with feeling personal joy, pride, and fulfillment in making, building, and creating.
After all, your motivation to bring things to life comes from within, and there’s nothing wrong with the desire to satisfy your dreams and passions.
But the end result of your work should never be just for you.
Psalm 8 shows that God was mindful of us when He made man a little lower than the angels. He took personal care to make sure we had everything we needed to succeed and prosper.
To be mindful of others in the act of creation is to think as God thinks.
So, whether you are baking a cake, writing a song, or building a business, you can create with His motivations in mind by asking a single question:
“Does what I’m making improve someone else’s life?”
If you need another example of God’s selflessness in creation, look no further than the example of Jesus.
The One who created everything served the people He created - even to the point of becoming a craftsman/artisan Himself.
So, just as our Savior acted selflessly in coming to earth and serving those He created, let every task and creative endeavor you undertake today flow from your desire to serve and bless others.
ACTION STEPS
Consider the work you’re doing, whether professionally or as a hobby, and think of one person who could be blessed by what you’re making.
Focus on how he or she will be blessed as you work on your project.
If possible, reach out and ask them how you can serve them more effectively with your gifts and talents.
