Why Do We Call It Christmas?

DAY 6 OF 10

You may hear the word “Hanukkah” a lot around Christmas time. Some of your friends may even celebrate this holiday and not celebrate Christmas like your family. Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that is celebrated in December. Jesus was Jewish, and he celebrated Hanukkah! It used to be called the Feast of Dedication, and it celebrates the 8-day rededication of the temple in Jerusalem. In the period between the Old Testament and the New Testament, a neighboring empire controlled Jerusalem and forbade the Jews from worshipping in their temple. A group of brothers beat the other empire’s army and they spent 8 days cleaning the temple. They were grateful to God for taking care of them and today, our Jewish brothers and sisters all over the world praise God for His faithfulness during Hanukkah. Let’s praise God for His faithfulness to us!
