Focus Refined The subtle seduction to forget the fleeting and fragile nature of this life is constantly tugging at us. We get so used to this body, this world, and everything that goes along with it that we fall under the spell of thinking that it's all that will ever be. And the result is that we fail to see our life on earth as a precious commodity. Instead we start viewing it as a long, drawn-out, and open-ended existence. God sees our earthly existence much differently, and He shares His perspective through this Psalm. From His vantage point, our life is like a vapor and a shadow-something that's quickly passing away and gone before you know it. That might be a hard concept for a lot of us to swallow. After all, our lives don't seem that way. But when measured against eternity, God's estimation is absolutely right. The years that we might experience here on earth are next to nothing when you consider the infinite existence that awaits us. Before we know it, this life will be over, and we're going to have all eternity to consider how we spent it. This ought to refine our focus while we're here. It ought to make us more mindful of how precious our time is. And it ought to dictate what we do with it. We need to wake-up to the fact that the clock is running, that our routines and surroundings will eventually pass away, and that those who are the most eternally minded are those who make the most of their earthly existence. Giver of all life, thank you for the time You've given us here on earth. Refine our focus and lead us to live in light of eternity.
