DAY 66 OF 365

The Physical

As we come closer to the cross, to this event that serves as the centerpiece for God's grand plan to undo the effects of mankind's fall, we need to examine what it involved from a physical standpoint. It's not easy to look at this, but it's necessary if we're to fully appreciate what took place on the cross for our sake. The prophet Isaiah foretold of Christ's suffering on the cross by prophesying that He would be "wounded" for our sins. The field of medicine has determined that there are five different types of wounds, and Jesus experienced each one on the day of His crucifixion.

A lacerated wound is produced by a tearing instrument. This is what Jesus suffered from the "cat of nine tails" as His back was brutally scourged prior to being crucified (Matthew 27:26). A penetrating wound is a deep wound that is caused by a sharp-ended instrument. When the crown of thorns was forced onto Jesus brow, He suffered multiple lacerations (Matthew 27:29). A contused wound is produced by a blunt instrument that produces a severe bruise. This is what Jesus experienced when He was beaten on the face with rods by the soldiers who led Him to the cross (Matthew 27:30). An incised wound is a cut that is produced by a sharp-edged instrument. When a spear was thrust into Jesus' side as He hung on the cross, it made an indelible incision (John 19:34). Lastly, a perforating wound literally means "to pierce." As Jesus was crucified on the cross, the spikes that the Roman soldiers used to affix Him perforated His wrists and ankles (John 20:24-29).

Truly, Jesus was wounded, and He was wounded in a way that was complete and comprehensive. But as we'll see tomorrow, what He endured physically on the cross doesn't even scratch the surface of His suffering.

The field of medicine has determined that there are five different types of wounds, and Jesus experienced each one on the day of His crucifixion.

Think about it...

What does this passage reveal to me about God?

What does this passage reveal to me about myself?

Based on this, what changes do I need to make?

What is my prayer for today?
