DAY 169 OF 365

Jehovah

We now come to what is unquestionably the most significant of all God's names. In the course of His conversation with Moses, the Lord reveals what His own personal name is: Jehovah.

It's as if God was saying, "You've come up with a lot of names that do well in identifying Me from your side of eternity. But now I want to let you in on something from My side. Let me tell you what My actual name is. Let me tell you the most intimate way of addressing me so we can relate on a first-name basis."

In ancient times, the Israelites had such reverence for this name that they wouldn't even say it out loud. Instead, they would simply refer to it as "the name." They understood that this name was something that had come to them from the eternal realm, something that had been uttered from the very throne of heaven. It was sacred and special.

The name Jehovah also represents God's special covenant with the Israelites. Not just anybody had the ability to call God Jehovah. Only those who enjoyed a one-of-a-kind relationship with Him, only those who were on a first-name basis with Him, could rightfully use this name.

So whenever the name Jehovah was used, it was a reminder to every Israelite that the transcendent God had initiated a special relationship with them, a relationship that Christians have inherited through Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20).

How incredible to consider that God would be willing to share something so personal with us! How amazing to know that the One who possesses all power and authority, who spoke the universe into existence, who is perfect in every possible way, would allow us to be on a first-name-basis with Him...by revealing to us "the name."

Not just anybody had the ability to call God Jehovah. Only those who enjoyed a one-of-a-kind relationship with Him, only those who were on a first-name basis with Him, could rightfully use this name.

Think about it...

What does this passage reveal to me about God?

What does this passage reveal to me about myself?

Based on this, what changes do I need to make?

What is my prayer for today?
