El-qanna
Next on our name list is El-qanna. As we've already seen, the word El represents God in a general way. When it's connected to another Hebrew word, it creates a name that describes His character in a much deeper and more specific way.
In this case, the connecting word is qanna, which is translated as "jealous." So among His many other names, God is also El-qanna, the "jealous God" or "God of jealousy."
Hold on! I thought God was good. How can something as wrong as jealousy be used to describe Him, much less be His name?
This word qanna literally means "consuming zeal" or "intense passion," and it can be applied either negatively or positively. Qanna for another person's property is envy, which is wrong.
But qanna for one's own property is actually very positive. A business owner should be zealous about their business, and a parent ought to have intense passion for their children. That's the application here when it comes to God being El-qanna. He is jealous in the sense that He's consumed with zeal and filled with intense passion for His people.
Many of us think of God as a distant deity who has an apathetic "take it or leave it" attitude about us. We wrongly assume that because God is God, and we're just a speck in comparison, He can't possibly care about us.
That perspective is purely unbiblical. God is not lukewarm or ho-hum when it comes to us. He is El-qanna. He's filled with a zealous passion for us. And if we want to see El-qanna in action, we need look no further than the Cross, where this great zeal and passion made an indelible mark in human history and in our hearts.
God is not lukewarm or ho-hum when it comes to us. He is El-qanna. He's filled with a zealous passion for us
Think about it...
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
