Any attempt at an accurate understanding of marriage, and any hopes of having a healthy marriage, has to start with this truth: Marriage was God's idea from the beginning.

Simply stated, marriage is God's gig. He came up with it in the first place, and we need to recognize that fact right from the get-go. Why? Because if we view the institution of marriage as something manmade, we tend to devalue it.

Mankind has come up with some pretty good ideas over the years, but we've also come up with quite a few bad ones. For example, a hunting magazine recently ran an ad for a hollowed-out Styrofoam deer that hunters can hide in. But what happens if another hunter sees it from afar?

We understand that the mind of man isn't as reliable as we'd like it to be. In a lot of cases, our ideas fail-and fail miserably. And if we think of marriage as just one more man-inspired idea, we're going to scrutinize and question it. Is this really worth doing? Is it possible marriage is past its prime? Can we come up with something better for our day and age?

Yes, it is worth doing, no it's not past its prime, and no we can't come up with something better. Why? Because marriage was God's idea, not ours...and His ideas are infinitely better than ours. They don't need to be revisited or revised. Marriage's value is connected to the fact that it comes straight out of the heart and mind of Almighty God.

Every other biblical truth concerning marriage is founded on this fact: marriage is God's idea and not man's. And when we're open to this truth, we'll be open to what the rest of God's Word has to tell us about marriage.
