The Lineage of Jesus and the Promise of Easter

DAY 1 OF 7

The Significance of Jesus' Lineage in the Easter Story

Scripture Reading: Matthew 1:1-17

Discussion Points:

  • Why does Matthew begin his Gospel with Jesus' genealogy?
  • The cultural and theological importance of lineage in Scripture.
  • How Jesus' genealogy sets the stage for His role as the Messiah.

Matthew provides us with a detailed account of Jesus’ lineage, offering a powerful glimpse into God’s sovereign plan. It’s remarkable that Scripture includes this genealogy, allowing us to see not only how God orchestrated Jesus’ arrival but also the individuals He chose to be part of that story. Each person played a role, demonstrating God’s ability to work through generations to fulfill His purposes.

This genealogy also reminds us that our own history matters to God. Where we come from—our family, culture, and experiences—shapes our journey. Through salvation, we are brought into the family of God, gaining access to the Father and becoming part of a greater spiritual heritage.

Just as God was intentional in the lineage of Jesus, He is intentional with each of us.

In this study, we will continue exploring Jesus’ lineage, reflecting on how God is both the ultimate planner and the great redeemer. We encourage you to consider your own family story and the ways being part of God’s family has shaped your life.

Reflection: How does understanding Jesus’ lineage deepen your appreciation of His sacrifice and resurrection?
