The Greatest Love Story

DAY 2 OF 3

True love for God transcends emotions and feelings; it's demonstrated in how we live. Consider marriage, a relationship designed to reflect Christ's connection with the church. In my own marriage, I’ve had to learn that loving my husband meant more than just feeling it in my heart - I had to show it through my actions, my choices, and my daily decisions. I had to respond to his love towards me by loving him well in return.

The same principle guides our relationship with God. Our love for Him is expressed through three key elements: obedience, faithfulness, and devotion. We cannot claim to love Jesus, declare ourselves followers of Christ, and then live however we want. That's not love - that's just lip service.

Consider this for a moment: If I professed my love toward my husband but consistently acted in ways that dishonored and disrespected the relationship, the authenticity of that love would be in question, and rightfully so. Our relationship with God operates on the same principle. 1 John 5:3 tells us, "For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments, and His commandments are not burdensome."

But here's where it gets even more interesting - our love for God isn't just vertical (between us and Him); it's also horizontal (extending to those around us). Jesus made this clear when He said the second greatest commandment, right after loving God, is to love our neighbor as ourselves. When we truly love God, it fundamentally transforms how we love others.

I've experienced this personally. There were times when my interactions with others fell short of God's standard of love. Being cordial or ‘nice’ isn't the same as showing genuine kindness. The Bible speaks of loving kindness - a deeper, more meaningful expression of God's love. True love creates an inviting atmosphere of peace around us, allowing others to sense God's presence through our actions.

The world needs to experience the love of Jesus now more than ever. Will you be the vessel through which His perfect love reaches those around you?

Pause and Ponder: In what practical ways can you demonstrate your love for God through obedience today?
