How to Live Out Your Faith at Work

DAY 2 OF 5

Exemplifying Christ in Relationships

‘Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.’

(Ephesians 4:32 NLT)

The environment you work in may be made up of a very eclectic mix of individuals – individuals of different ages, backgrounds or experiences.

This can make for a very interesting workplace!

When people from different demographics are thrown together with a variety of skills, personalities and purposes, it can sometimes result in conflict.

Conflict is challenging at the best of times, but when the added pressure of deadlines and forced proximity for example, tensions can heighten.

As a follower of Jesus, we have many biblical references to guide us in such instances, namely today’s title verse from Ephesians 4:32.

Why did the apostle Paul feel the need to remind us to be kind to each other? Tenderhearted? Forgiving of one another? My guess would be because our default as humans is to act in a manner more congruent with the verse prior:

‘Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.’

(Ephesians 4:31 NLT)

When I am wronged, offended or challenged, it is not usually my natural instinct to be kind. I’m just being honest. My instinct is to be angry, hurt and defensive.

Paul encourages us to reflect Jesus in these cases.

This is not always easy – in fact it is difficult! But that is why we have the Holy Spirit, discernment and wisdom on the inside of us!

When we are in a position of confrontation in the workplace, it is wise to take a moment, pray and apply grace to the situation. When we do this, we are more closely reflecting Christ to those around us and have more chance of diffusing and resolving a confrontation than if we blew up.

I am probably not sharing something that you are not already aware of. But what I am hopefully doing is reminding you of Jesus’s precepts and encouraging you to apply them to any contentious workplace situations.

If anger or healthy confrontation is an area that you struggle with why not try this.

Choose one coworker to show intentional kindness toward today, such as through a kind word, a small favor, or a note of encouragement.

These seemingly simple acts can help to cultivate positivity in both you and your workplace and lay the groundwork for a healthy working environment.
