Acts 13:1-3 | a Long Obedience

DAY 5 OF 5

Where are You Sending Us?

Jesus commanded his disciples to go out, spread the gospel, and make more disciples. It’s safe to assume he meant it.

Our sinful nature may tell us we are insignificant, and that we don’t have any impact on those around us. We might ask how God could use someone like me. We can justify inaction by saying we aren’t a Paul or Barnabas; what difference could we make in spreading the gospel?

The good news is we don’t have to be a Paul or Barnabas. Even Paul wasn’t always a “Paul,” and Barnabas a “Barnabas.” They were simply two men who responded to God’s call to obedience. Through it, God developed them.

We only need to be obedient to where the Holy Spirit calls us, which most of the time is right where we are. Our mission fields are our neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces: areas where we are uniquely qualified to serve God’s kingdom.

Before Antioch sent Paul and Barnabas off, they laid hands on them to prepare them for their journey. When we leave for work, school, or whatever the day has in store for us, the Holy Spirit lays his hands upon us too, in a way. Not just once, but every day we enter our mission fields.

When you enter the mission field God has put you in, the Holy Spirit is there. He’ll give you guidance and direction. This is the same Holy Spirit that sent Paul and Barnabas. We may not be them, but we’re not supposed to be. All we’re supposed to be is obedient. You share in that same Holy Spirit.

If this plan helped orient you to the ongoing work and teaching of Jesus in this world, we encourage you to subscribe to our other plans on Acts.

Day 4

About this Plan

Acts 13:1-3 | a Long Obedience

Obedience is not a once-and-done approach to life. It is a daily discipline of choosing God’s way over our way. This 5-day plan continues our journey through the book of Acts, the Bible’s gripping sequel of Jesus at work in the life of his followers as he expands his kingdom to the ends of the earth, and as they learn to follow him. It’s a journey on what it means to be a Christian. It’s a story in which you have a role to play. It’s a story about what God can do through you.
