DAY 1 OF 7

Running with Joy

Paul likens the Christian life to running a race and finishing it with joy, even amid trials. This metaphor resonates deeply with athletes who often view their sport as a form of ministry. The question is, how does one find joy in the race, especially when the path is fraught with challenges?

Athletes face countless hurdles, such as distractions, peer pressure, performance expectations, and the temptation to compromise or take shortcuts. Paul’s journey was filled with hardships, yet he remained steadfast and focused on finishing well. But like Paul, we are called to stay the course, keeping our eyes on the ultimate goal: running for God’s glory.

Finding joy in the race is about more than just winning; it's about knowing you're doing the right thing, in the right way, for the right reasons. Whether you’re the star player or sitting on the bench, if you give your best effort and stay true to your values, you can finish your race with joy.

In professional sports, the pressure is intense, and it’s easy to lose sight of what matters. Coaches like Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors emphasize values like joy as central to their teams’ culture. Even under immense stress, every player is encouraged to find joy in their participation. This approach isn't just for the pros; it’s something every athlete can embrace.

Finishing your race well doesn’t necessarily mean reaching the next level of competition. For some, participation in competitive sports ends in high school or college, and that’s okay. The key is to look back on your time with a sense of joy and accomplishment, knowing you gave your all and did it for the right reasons.

If you’re a sports minister or coach, you have the opportunity to help athletes find joy in their journey. By fostering a culture that emphasizes God’s glory over individual success, you can help athletes finish their race well, whether their athletic career ends sooner than expected or extends into professional sports. If you’re an athlete, the goal isn’t the championship, but finding joy in the journey God has put you on.

So today, reflect on your race. Consider not just your participation in competitive sports, but your Christian walk. Are you running your race with joy? Are you helping others do the same? Run in a way that honors God and brings you and those around you, joy. Start by embracing the moment, giving your best effort, and trusting that God’s grace will carry you to the finish line.
