1 Samuel 8-15: The Rise and Fall of a KingSample

A Heart Transformed By God
By Romina Chevren
"As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all these signs were fulfilled that day. . . . Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant, ‘Where have you been?’ ‘Looking for the donkeys,’ he said. ‘But when we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.’ Saul’s uncle said, ‘Tell me what Samuel said to you.’ Saul replied, ‘He assured us that the donkeys had been found.’ But he did not tell his uncle what Samuel had said about the kingship.”—1 Samuel 10:9–16 (NIV)
This passage highlights a pivotal moment in Saul’s life, one that demonstrates God’s transformative power. After being anointed privately by Samuel as the first king of Israel, Saul experienced a profound internal change: “God changed Saul’s heart.” This was not merely an emotional experience, but a divine preparation for the monumental role he was about to undertake. Saul, an ordinary man, was being equipped by God to step into an extraordinary calling.
The transformation wasn’t just internal, it was accompanied by external confirmations. Samuel had foretold specific signs, and each one came to pass that very day. These signs served to reassure Saul that God’s hand was upon him and that he wasn’t stepping into this role alone. Yet, even with such clear confirmation, Saul hesitated. When questioned by his uncle about his meeting with Samuel, Saul mentioned only the search for the donkeys, omitting the news of his anointing as king. Was this omission rooted in humility, fear, or uncertainty? Perhaps all three emotions were at play.
Saul’s reluctance is relatable. When God calls us to something significant, we often feel unworthy or unprepared. Even when He provides confirmation, it can be difficult to fully embrace His plans, especially when they challenge our comfort zones or expectations for our lives. Saul’s initial hesitation reflects the human tendency to wrestle with doubt, even in the face of God’s evident work.
This passage challenges us to consider how we respond to God’s transforming work. Like Saul, we may experience moments when God is clearly calling us to step into something greater. He may be equipping us for leadership, ministry, or a new chapter in our lives. But do we embrace His calling, or do we hold back, reluctant to share or act on what He’s doing?
It’s also a reminder that God often begins His transformation in quiet, unseen ways. Saul’s heart was changed privately, long before the public recognition of his kingship. Similarly, God’s work in our hearts often begins in the hidden places, preparing us for what lies ahead. Our role is to trust Him in those moments, leaning on His guidance and timing.
This story invites us to reflect on our own willingness to step forward in faith. Are we open to the transformation God’s working in us, even if it feels overwhelming? Are we willing to trust that He’ll equip us for whatever He calls us to do? And are we bold enough to share and live out His work in our lives?
Pause:
·Reflect on a time when you sensed God working in your heart. Did you fully embrace it, or did you hesitate?
·Consider areas where God might be calling you to step forward, even if you feel unprepared or unsure.
Practice:
1. Recognize His Work: Spend time in prayer asking God to reveal where He’s transforming your heart or preparing you for a new season.
2. Take One Step: Identify one specific action you can take this week to move toward God’s calling, trusting His guidance and provision.
3. Be Open to Share: Share with a trusted friend, mentor, or loved one what God’s doing in your life. Their encouragement can help you step forward with confidence.
Pray: Lord, thank You for transforming my heart and preparing me for the plans You have for me. Help me to trust Your timing and to embrace Your calling with faith, even when I feel unprepared or afraid. Teach me to rely on Your Spirit and to recognize the signs of Your presence and provision. May my life reflect Your glory as I step into the purposes You have set before me. Amen.
