Are you enjoying the series ‘Learn to Discern’ so far? Have you learned anything new or received any revelations? I’d love to know.

As I’ve said before, every believer has direct access to discern God’s will. We no longer need to rely on a Holy person such as a prophet, priest, or pastor to mediate for us. Jesus, our ultimate High Priest, is in heaven and has paved the way back to the Father through His death and resurrection. Now, we can:

Approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. – Hebrews 4:16

That said, seeking wise counsel from Godly people is crucial to spiritual discernment and a Biblical principle:

Get all the advice and instruction you can, so you will be wise the rest of your life. – Proverbs 19:20

The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice. – Proverbs 12:15

Surely you need guidance to wage war, and victory is won through many advisers. – Proverbs 24:6

A beautiful example is the story of Moses and his father-in-law, Jethro, in Exodus 18. Jethro notices that Moses is overwhelmed and gives him thoughtful, practical advice. First, he asks challenging questions (verse 14) and then offers a solution out of genuine concern for Moses’ well-being (verse 18). Finally, he acknowledges that it is ultimately God who has to make His will known to Moses, regardless of his advice:

“If you follow this advice, and if God commands you to do so, then you will be able to endure the pressures, and all these people will go home in peace.” – Exodus 18:23

Who are the “Jethros” in your life? Take a moment to list the Godly counsellors you trust—those who ask the right questions, care for your well-being and recognise that God has the final say.
