Day 3) The Tombs (God’s Promise Of Resurrection)
Three Types Of Resurrection
1) Saints’ Resurrection
Throughout history, this has been one of the most difficult passages in the Bible to fully comprehend. It is so amazing, so astounding, that many people simply do not know what to make of it. While we are not told what the bodies of the saints did after “[appearing] to many”, we do know that this event hints at the ultimate resurrection that would change history forever—only three days later.
2) Jesus’ Resurrection
Early on Sunday morning, it was discovered that the stone in front of Jesus’ tomb had been rolled away. The impossible had happened. Jesus had fully died and fully come back to life, forever conquering sin through His sacrifice on the cross and defeating death through His miraculous resurrection. This moment, celebrated every year by Christians around the world on Easter Sunday, serves as the foundation of our hope in eternal life!
3) Our Resurrection
Our resurrection, amazingly, has two layers to it. First, if we place our faith in Jesus, the Bible makes it clear that we spiritually transition from death to life, becoming a new creation in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17). However, we are also promised a literal resurrection, aligned with the redemption of all creation that we studied last week, where we will receive our new resurrection bodies (1 Corinthians 15:51-52). While the specific details of this incredible promise are not clear, it is evident that Jesus’ death and resurrection have made a way for resurrection and renewal for all of creation!
Big Idea: Jesus’ resurrection is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promise, foreshadowed by the saints’ resurrection and pointing to our future hope of eternal life. Through His victory over sin and death, we are offered both spiritual renewal now and the assurance of a bodily resurrection to come.
Let’s Think About This:
Question 1) How do the saints in Matthew 27:52-53 foreshadow Jesus’ resurrection? What do you think it would have been like to be alive during these events?
Question 2) Why is Jesus' resurrection the foundation of our faith, and how does it give us hope today? To learn more about what the Bible says about our future resurrection, read 1 Corinthians 15.
Question 3) How does the promise of resurrection and renewal impact the way we live our daily lives and relate to others?
About this Plan

The incredible story of Jesus’ horrific death and miraculous resurrection has been retold so many times that, if we’re not careful, we might overlook the significance of some of the smaller details of the events that took place between Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday. In the “Open Up” Bible study, we’re going to take a closer look at four things that miraculously “opened” in Matthew 27:50-56 immediately following Jesus' last breath. Prayerfully, as we dive deeper into this passage together, the Holy Spirit will open up our hearts to the profound implications of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection!
