 <div class="label">22</div><div class="s1">Protection of Property</div><div class="p"> # In Hebrew texts 22:1 is numbered 21:37, and 22:2-31 is numbered 22:1-30. 1&#8220;Whoever steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it must pay back five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.</div><div class="p"> 2&#8220;If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed; 3but if it happens after sunrise, the defender is guilty of bloodshed.</div><div class="p">&#8220;Anyone who steals must certainly make restitution, but if they have nothing, they must be sold to pay for their theft. 4If the stolen animal is found alive in their possession&#8212;whether ox or donkey or sheep&#8212;they must pay back double.</div><div class="p"> 5&#8220;If anyone grazes their livestock in a field or vineyard and lets them stray and they graze in someone else&#8217;s field, the offender must make restitution from the best of their own field or vineyard.</div><div class="p"> 6&#8220;If a fire breaks out and spreads into thornbushes so that it burns shocks of grain or standing grain or the whole field, the one who started the fire must make restitution.</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;If anyone gives a neighbor silver or goods for safekeeping and they are stolen from the neighbor&#8217;s house, the thief, if caught, must pay back double. 8But if the thief is not found, the owner of the house must appear before the judges, and they must#22:8 Or before God, and he will determine whether the owner of the house has laid hands on the other person&#8217;s property. 9In all cases of illegal possession of an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any other lost property about which somebody says, &#8216;This is mine,&#8217; both parties are to bring their cases before the judges.#22:9 Or before God The one whom the judges declare#22:9 Or whom God declares guilty must pay back double to the other.</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;If anyone gives a donkey, an ox, a sheep or any other animal to their neighbor for safekeeping and it dies or is injured or is taken away while no one is looking, 11the issue between them will be settled by the taking of an oath before the Lord that the neighbor did not lay hands on the other person&#8217;s property. The owner is to accept this, and no restitution is required. 12But if the animal was stolen from the neighbor, restitution must be made to the owner. 13If it was torn to pieces by a wild animal, the neighbor shall bring in the remains as evidence and shall not be required to pay for the torn animal.</div><div class="p"> 14&#8220;If anyone borrows an animal from their neighbor and it is injured or dies while the owner is not present, they must make restitution. 15But if the owner is with the animal, the borrower will not have to pay. If the animal was hired, the money paid for the hire covers the loss.</div><div class="s1">Social Responsibility</div><div class="p"> 16&#8220;If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife. 17If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the bride-price for virgins.</div><div class="p"> 18&#8220;Do not allow a sorceress to live.</div><div class="p"> 19&#8220;Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal is to be put to death.</div><div class="p"> 20&#8220;Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the Lord must be destroyed.#22:20 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them.</div><div class="p"> 21&#8220;Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.</div><div class="p"> 22&#8220;Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless. 23If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry. 24My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.</div><div class="p"> 25&#8220;If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest. 26If you take your neighbor&#8217;s cloak as a pledge, return it by sunset, 27because that cloak is the only covering your neighbor has. What else can they sleep in? When they cry out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.</div><div class="p"> 28&#8220;Do not blaspheme God#22:28 Or Do not revile the judges or curse the ruler of your people.</div><div class="p"> 29&#8220;Do not hold back offerings from your granaries or your vats.#22:29 The meaning of the Hebrew for this phrase is uncertain.</div><div class="p">&#8220;You must give me the firstborn of your sons. 30Do the same with your cattle and your sheep. Let them stay with their mothers for seven days, but give them to me on the eighth day.</div><div class="p"> 31&#8220;You are to be my holy people. So do not eat the meat of an animal torn by wild beasts; throw it to the dogs.</div>

 <div class="label">7</div><div class="s1">That Which Defiles</div><div class="p"> 1The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus 2and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3(The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.#7:4 Some early manuscripts pitchers, kettles and dining couches)</div><div class="p"> 5So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, &#8220;Why don&#8217;t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6He replied, &#8220;Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:</div><div class="q1"> &#8220;&#8198;&#8216;These people honor me with their lips,</div><div class="q2"> but their hearts are far from me.</div><div class="q1"> 7 They worship me in vain;</div><div class="q2"> their teachings are merely human rules.&#8217; # 7:7 
 Isaiah 29:13
 </div><div class="m"> 8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9And he continued, &#8220;You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe#7:9 Some manuscripts set up your own traditions! 10For Moses said, &#8216;Honor your father and mother,&#8217;#7:10 Exodus 20:12; Deut. 5:16 and, &#8216;Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.&#8217;#7:10 Exodus 21:17; Lev. 20:9 11But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)&#8212; 12then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, &#8220;Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.&#8221; [16]#7:16 Some manuscripts include here the words of 4:23.</div><div class="p"> 17After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. 18&#8220;Are you so dull?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;Don&#8217;t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? 19For it doesn&#8217;t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.&#8221; (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.)</div><div class="p"> 20He went on: &#8220;What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21For it is from within, out of a person&#8217;s heart, that evil thoughts come&#8212;sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23All these evils come from inside and defile a person.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Honors a Syrophoenician Woman&#8217;s Faith</div><div class="p"> 24Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre.#7:24 Many early manuscripts Tyre and Sidon He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. 25In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. 26The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.</div><div class="p"> 27 &#8220;First let the children eat all they want,&#8221; he told her, &#8220;for it is not right to take the children&#8217;s bread and toss it to the dogs.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 28&#8220;Lord,&#8221; she replied, &#8220;even the dogs under the table eat the children&#8217;s crumbs.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 29Then he told her, &#8220;For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 30She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man</div><div class="p"> 31Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.#7:31 That is, the Ten Cities 32There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him.</div><div class="p"> 33After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man&#8217;s ears. Then he spit and touched the man&#8217;s tongue. 34He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, &#8220;Ephphatha!&#8221; (which means &#8220;Be opened!&#8221;). 35At this, the man&#8217;s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.</div><div class="p"> 36Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37People were overwhelmed with amazement. &#8220;He has done everything well,&#8221; they said. &#8220;He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.&#8221;</div>

On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone&#8217;s conscience in the sight of God. 3And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus&#8217; sake. 6For God, who said, &#8220;Let light shine out of darkness,&#8221;#4:6 Gen. 1:3 made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God&#8217;s glory displayed in the face of Christ.</div><div class="p"> 7But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus&#8217; sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.</div><div class="p"> 13It is written: &#8220;I believed; therefore I have spoken.&#8221;#4:13 Psalm 116:10 (see Septuagint) Since we have that same spirit of#4:13 Or Spirit-given faith, we also believe and therefore speak, 14because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself. 15All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.</div><div class="p"> 16Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.</div>
