 <div class="label">5</div><div class="s1">The Purity of the Camp</div><div class="p"> 1The Lord said to Moses, 2&#8220;Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has a defiling skin disease#5:2 The Hebrew word for defiling skin disease, traditionally translated &#8220;leprosy,&#8221; was used for various diseases affecting the skin. or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean because of a dead body. 3Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.&#8221; 4The Israelites did so; they sent them outside the camp. They did just as the Lord had instructed Moses.</div><div class="s1">Restitution for Wrongs</div><div class="p"> 5The Lord said to Moses, 6&#8220;Say to the Israelites: &#8216;Any man or woman who wrongs another in any way#5:6 Or woman who commits any wrong common to mankind and so is unfaithful to the Lord is guilty 7and must confess the sin they have committed. They must make full restitution for the wrong they have done, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the person they have wronged. 8But if that person has no close relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the Lord and must be given to the priest, along with the ram with which atonement is made for the wrongdoer. 9All the sacred contributions the Israelites bring to a priest will belong to him. 10Sacred things belong to their owners, but what they give to the priest will belong to the priest.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Test for an Unfaithful Wife</div><div class="p"> 11Then the Lord said to Moses, 12&#8220;Speak to the Israelites and say to them: &#8216;If a man&#8217;s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him 13so that another man has sexual relations with her, and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act), 14and if feelings of jealousy come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impure&#8212;or if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impure&#8212; 15then he is to take his wife to the priest. He must also take an offering of a tenth of an ephah#5:15 That is, probably about 3 1/2 pounds or about 1.6 kilograms of barley flour on her behalf. He must not pour olive oil on it or put incense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, a reminder-offering to draw attention to wrongdoing.</div><div class="p"> 16&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the Lord. 17Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. 18After the priest has had the woman stand before the Lord, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder-offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse. 19Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, &#8220;If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. 20But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband&#8221;&#8212; 21here the priest is to put the woman under this curse&#8212;&#8220;may the Lord cause you to become a curse#5:21 That is, may he cause your name to be used in cursing (see Jer. 29:22); or, may others see that you are cursed; similarly in verse 27. among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. 22May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Then the woman is to say, &#8220;Amen. So be it.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 23&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the bitter water. 24He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering will enter her. 25The priest is to take from her hands the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the Lord and bring it to the altar. 26The priest is then to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial#5:26 Or representative offering and burn it on the altar; after that, he is to have the woman drink the water. 27If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse. 28If, however, the woman has not made herself impure, but is clean, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children.</div><div class="p"> 29&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;This, then, is the law of jealousy when a woman goes astray and makes herself impure while married to her husband, 30or when feelings of jealousy come over a man because he suspects his wife. The priest is to have her stand before the Lord and is to apply this entire law to her. 31The husband will be innocent of any wrongdoing, but the woman will bear the consequences of her sin.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">11</div><div class="s1">The Covenant Is Broken</div><div class="p"> 1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2&#8220;Listen to the terms of this covenant and tell them to the people of Judah and to those who live in Jerusalem. 3Tell them that this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: &#8216;Cursed is the one who does not obey the terms of this covenant&#8212; 4the terms I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the iron-smelting furnace.&#8217; I said, &#8216;Obey me and do everything I command you, and you will be my people, and I will be your God. 5Then I will fulfill the oath I swore to your ancestors, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey&#8217;&#8212;the land you possess today.&#8221;</div><div class="p">I answered, &#8220;Amen, Lord.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6The Lord said to me, &#8220;Proclaim all these words in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: &#8216;Listen to the terms of this covenant and follow them. 7From the time I brought your ancestors up from Egypt until today, I warned them again and again, saying, &#8220;Obey me.&#8221; 8But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil hearts. So I brought on them all the curses of the covenant I had commanded them to follow but that they did not keep.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9Then the Lord said to me, &#8220;There is a conspiracy among the people of Judah and those who live in Jerusalem. 10They have returned to the sins of their ancestors, who refused to listen to my words. They have followed other gods to serve them. Both Israel and Judah have broken the covenant I made with their ancestors. 11Therefore this is what the Lord says: &#8216;I will bring on them a disaster they cannot escape. Although they cry out to me, I will not listen to them. 12The towns of Judah and the people of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they burn incense, but they will not help them at all when disaster strikes. 13You, Judah, have as many gods as you have towns; and the altars you have set up to burn incense to that shameful god Baal are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 14&#8220;Do not pray for this people or offer any plea or petition for them, because I will not listen when they call to me in the time of their distress.</div><div class="q1"> 15&#8220;What is my beloved doing in my temple</div><div class="q2">as she, with many others, works out her evil schemes?</div><div class="q2">Can consecrated meat avert your punishment?</div><div class="q1">When you engage in your wickedness,</div><div class="q2">then you rejoice.#11:15 Or Could consecrated meat avert your punishment? / Then you would rejoice&#8221;</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 16The Lord called you a thriving olive tree</div><div class="q2">with fruit beautiful in form.</div><div class="q1">But with the roar of a mighty storm</div><div class="q2">he will set it on fire,</div><div class="q2">and its branches will be broken.</div><div class="m"> 17The Lord Almighty, who planted you, has decreed disaster for you, because the people of both Israel and Judah have done evil and aroused my anger by burning incense to Baal.</div><div class="s1">Plot Against Jeremiah</div><div class="p"> 18Because the Lord revealed their plot to me, I knew it, for at that time he showed me what they were doing. 19I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; I did not realize that they had plotted against me, saying,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Let us destroy the tree and its fruit;</div><div class="q2">let us cut him off from the land of the living,</div><div class="q2">that his name be remembered no more.&#8221;</div><div class="q1"> 20But you, Lord Almighty, who judge righteously</div><div class="q2">and test the heart and mind,</div><div class="q1">let me see your vengeance on them,</div><div class="q2">for to you I have committed my cause.</div><div class="p"> 21Therefore this is what the Lord says about the people of Anathoth who are threatening to kill you, saying, &#8220;Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord or you will die by our hands&#8221;&#8212; 22therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;I will punish them. Their young men will die by the sword, their sons and daughters by famine. 23Not even a remnant will be left to them, because I will bring disaster on the people of Anathoth in the year of their punishment.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">12</div><div class="s1">Jeremiah&#8217;s Complaint</div><div class="q1"> 1You are always righteous, Lord,</div><div class="q2">when I bring a case before you.</div><div class="q1">Yet I would speak with you about your justice:</div><div class="q2">Why does the way of the wicked prosper?</div><div class="q2">Why do all the faithless live at ease?</div><div class="q1"> 2You have planted them, and they have taken root;</div><div class="q2">they grow and bear fruit.</div><div class="q1">You are always on their lips</div><div class="q2">but far from their hearts.</div><div class="q1"> 3Yet you know me, Lord;</div><div class="q2">you see me and test my thoughts about you.</div><div class="q1">Drag them off like sheep to be butchered!</div><div class="q2">Set them apart for the day of slaughter!</div><div class="q1"> 4How long will the land lie parched</div><div class="q2">and the grass in every field be withered?</div><div class="q1">Because those who live in it are wicked,</div><div class="q2">the animals and birds have perished.</div><div class="q1">Moreover, the people are saying,</div><div class="q2">&#8220;He will not see what happens to us.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">God&#8217;s Answer</div><div class="q1"> 5&#8220;If you have raced with men on foot</div><div class="q2">and they have worn you out,</div><div class="q2">how can you compete with horses?</div><div class="q1">If you stumble#12:5 Or you feel secure only in safe country,</div><div class="q2">how will you manage in the thickets by#12:5 Or the flooding of the Jordan?</div><div class="q1"> 6Your relatives, members of your own family&#8212;</div><div class="q2">even they have betrayed you;</div><div class="q2">they have raised a loud cry against you.</div><div class="q1">Do not trust them,</div><div class="q2">though they speak well of you.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 7&#8220;I will forsake my house,</div><div class="q2">abandon my inheritance;</div><div class="q1">I will give the one I love</div><div class="q2">into the hands of her enemies.</div><div class="q1"> 8My inheritance has become to me</div><div class="q2">like a lion in the forest.</div><div class="q1">She roars at me;</div><div class="q2">therefore I hate her.</div><div class="q1"> 9Has not my inheritance become to me</div><div class="q2">like a speckled bird of prey</div><div class="q2">that other birds of prey surround and attack?</div><div class="q1">Go and gather all the wild beasts;</div><div class="q2">bring them to devour.</div><div class="q1"> 10Many shepherds will ruin my vineyard</div><div class="q2">and trample down my field;</div><div class="q1">they will turn my pleasant field</div><div class="q2">into a desolate wasteland.</div><div class="q1"> 11It will be made a wasteland,</div><div class="q2">parched and desolate before me;</div><div class="q1">the whole land will be laid waste</div><div class="q2">because there is no one who cares.</div><div class="q1"> 12Over all the barren heights in the desert</div><div class="q2">destroyers will swarm,</div><div class="q1">for the sword of the Lord will devour</div><div class="q2">from one end of the land to the other;</div><div class="q2">no one will be safe.</div><div class="q1"> 13They will sow wheat but reap thorns;</div><div class="q2">they will wear themselves out but gain nothing.</div><div class="q1">They will bear the shame of their harvest</div><div class="q2">because of the Lord&#8217;s fierce anger.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14This is what the Lord says: &#8220;As for all my wicked neighbors who seize the inheritance I gave my people Israel, I will uproot them from their lands and I will uproot the people of Judah from among them. 15But after I uproot them, I will again have compassion and will bring each of them back to their own inheritance and their own country. 16And if they learn well the ways of my people and swear by my name, saying, &#8216;As surely as the Lord lives&#8217;&#8212;even as they once taught my people to swear by Baal&#8212;then they will be established among my people. 17But if any nation does not listen, I will completely uproot and destroy it,&#8221; declares the Lord.</div>

They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.</div><div class="p"> 4Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, &#8220;Who is it you want?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5&#8220;Jesus of Nazareth,&#8221; they replied.</div><div class="p"> &#8220;I am he,&#8221; Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6When Jesus said, &#8220;I am he,&#8221; they drew back and fell to the ground.</div><div class="p"> 7Again he asked them, &#8220;Who is it you want?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Jesus of Nazareth,&#8221; they said.</div><div class="p"> 8Jesus answered, &#8220;I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.&#8221; 9This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: &#8220;I have not lost one of those you gave me.&#8221;#18:9 John 6:39</div><div class="p"> 10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest&#8217;s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant&#8217;s name was Malchus.)</div><div class="p"> 11Jesus commanded Peter, &#8220;Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him 13and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.</div><div class="s1">Peter&#8217;s First Denial</div><div class="p"> 15Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest&#8217;s courtyard, 16but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;You aren&#8217;t one of this man&#8217;s disciples too, are you?&#8221; she asked Peter.</div><div class="p">He replied, &#8220;I am not.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.</div><div class="s1">The High Priest Questions Jesus</div><div class="p"> 19Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.</div><div class="p"> 20 &#8220;I have spoken openly to the world,&#8221; Jesus replied. &#8220;I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. 21Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 22When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. &#8220;Is this the way you answer the high priest?&#8221; he demanded.</div><div class="p"> 23 &#8220;If I said something wrong,&#8221; Jesus replied, &#8220;testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?&#8221; 24Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.</div>
