Leading With LimitationsSample

Google’s vision statement is “to provide access to the world’s information in one click.” Apple’s vision statement is “to make the best products on earth and to leave the world better than we found it.” Both statements require data, production, and power. But nobody who has ever lived has been more powerful than Jesus—and He voluntarily gave that power up.
In Philippians 2:5-7, we see how Jesus purposefully embraced limitations. In Heaven, Jesus is “in very nature God”—he is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent, as is God the Father. Jesus knows everything, can do everything, and can be everywhere at once. But He purposefully stepped down from this exalted position to be with humanity in person.
Our smartphones are amazing tools, no doubt. But if you think about it, their whole purpose is to help us transcend our limited knowledge, limited power, and limited location. They help us move in the exact opposite direction that Jesus moved when He came to Earth.
That doesn’t mean smartphones are inherently evil. It does mean that we should ask the question: what effect are these abilities having on us and our relationships?
We’ll be discussing this question over the next several days.

About this Plan

When Jesus took on flesh, He purposefully embraced the limitations of being human. Our smartphones, meanwhile, are designed to help us transcend our day-to-day limitations. In this 5-day devotional, we'll be exploring the question of how these abilities are affecting us and our relationships. (This plan is adapted from the "Everything Smartphone" toolkit, available on our website.)
