Following Jesus in Nursing: A Daily Devotional for CaregiversSample

Take one minute, and breathe in and out slowly. Ask Jesus to make his presence known to you. Are there ways that you feel isolated or in need of healing?
Shame is a human emotion we all experience. Shame is also a weapon that can keep us small and isolated from others. We can begin to believe the lies that we’re alone in whatever situation we are dealing with. Lies that can keep us from recognizing the truth and redemption of Scripture.
My growing-up years were filled with doing things the “right” way. Problems within our family were not shared. Strength was expressed in pushing through whatever obstacle lay in front of you. You didn’t ask for help. Trying to “be” a certain way meant not being honest about failures, concerns, disappointments, and questions we can all experience. God does not mean for us to stay in this place of shame. For me, the steps began small: changing my password to “I am worthy” to remind myself God saw and wanted me; building self-compassion to quiet my deep inner critic; learning how to lament the emotions and difficulties of life; and recognizing that the work of salvation is not mine but his. Relationship is more than checking boxes. Relationship brings all I am to a God who sees, loves, and redeems. –Grateful for you, Christy
So many patients around us are feeling isolated right now. How can we take appropriate steps to break through the isolation and show love to our patients?
Dear Jesus, thank you for your care for me. Help me feel you with me today. Help me care well for others today in your strength. Amen
