Matthew chapter 1 begins with the genealogy of Jesus, tracing His lineage from Abraham to David and through to Joseph, the husband of Mary. When Joseph learns of Mary's pregnancy, an angel appears to him in a dream, explaining that the child is conceived by the Holy Spirit and will be the Messiah, named Jesus. This fulfills the prophecy from Isaiah that a virgin will bear a son called Emmanuel, meaning "God with us." Joseph obeys the angel's command and marries Mary.
