Stephen is the first in a long line of Christians who have given their lives for their faith. He is a continuation in the great story he recited to the council of God’s weaving through human history, which continues to this day. Like Psalm 136, between every line resounds “his steadfast love endures forever.” Stephen understood this and was willing to lay down his life before he saw it on earth as in heaven. Little did he know that the man at whose feet those who were killing him were laying their coats would become a bridge to the future of the church, one of the most significant.
