Finding the Real Jesus in the Music of Christmas

DAY 5 OF 7

Away in a Manger

This is, perhaps, the most kid-centered song we’ve examined so far. But just as Jesus encouraged us to have faith like a child, we can learn more about Him through the lyrics of this child’s song.

A lot of Christmas songs tell the story of Jesus’ birth in some form. Because that’s what Christmas is about. And this is no different. We are told of Jesus being placed in the manger because of a lack of a bed. We are also told that though Jesus was awake, He did not cry. Jesus’ not crying is simply speculation on the author’s part, as the Bible tells us nothing of Jesus’ demeanor as an infant. But I’m sure this is meant to highlight the divinity of Jesus, pointing out that even as a baby, Jesus was also God. But in our efforts to highlight Jesus’ divinity, we must be sure not to minimize His humanity. Not many things make less sense than the all-powerful God being an infant. But that is exactly what happened.

“And fit us for heaven to live with You there.” Jesus’ ultimate goal in being born as an infant was to become the perfect sacrifice to reconcile God and man. In doing so, He not only made a way for us to spend eternity in heaven but also ushered in the filling of the Holy Spirit, who helps “fit us for heaven” by helping us become more like Jesus before we make it to heaven.

About this Plan

Finding the Real Jesus in the Music of Christmas

It is easy to get caught up in all that the Christmas season offers. All the activities, celebrations, and tasks - even the good things - can overshadow Christmas' true meaning. This devotional will take the wonderful music of the season and use it to point back to the real meaning, the real Jesus.
