         <div class="label">6</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Decree of Darius</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="EZR.6.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">King Darius then issued an order, and they searched in the archives stored in the treasury at Babylon. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="EZR.6.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">A scroll was found in the citadel of Ecbatana in the province of Media, and this was written on it:</span></span></div><div class="pmo"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="EZR.6.2"><span class="content">Memorandum:</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="EZR.6.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="EZR.6.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">In the first year of King Cyrus, the king issued a decree concerning the temple of God in Jerusalem:</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="EZR.6.3"><span class="content">Let the temple be rebuilt as a place to present sacrifices, and let its foundations be laid. It is to be sixty cubits</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">6:3 </span><span class="ft">That is, about 90 feet or about 27 meters</span></span></span><span class="content"> high and sixty cubits wide, </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="EZR.6.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">with three courses of large stones and one of timbers. The costs are to be paid by the royal treasury. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="EZR.6.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Also, the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to Babylon, are to be returned to their places in the temple in Jerusalem; they are to be deposited in the house of God.</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="EZR.6.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="EZR.6.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Now then, Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and you other officials of that province, stay away from there. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="EZR.6.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Do not interfere with the work on this temple of God. Let the governor of the Jews and the Jewish elders rebuild this house of God on its site.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="EZR.6.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="EZR.6.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Moreover, I hereby decree what you are to do for these elders of the Jews in the construction of this house of God:</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="EZR.6.8"><span class="content">Their expenses are to be fully paid out of the royal treasury, from the revenues of Trans-Euphrates, so that the work will not stop. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="EZR.6.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Whatever is needed&#8212;young bulls, rams, male lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, and wheat, salt, wine and olive oil, as requested by the priests in Jerusalem&#8212;must be given them daily without fail, </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="EZR.6.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">so that they may offer sacrifices pleasing to the God of heaven and pray for the well-being of the king and his sons.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="EZR.6.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="EZR.6.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Furthermore, I decree that if anyone defies this edict, a beam is to be pulled from their house and they are to be impaled on it. And for this crime their house is to be made a pile of rubble. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="EZR.6.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">May God, who has caused his Name to dwell there, overthrow any king or people who lifts a hand to change this decree or to destroy this temple in Jerusalem.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="EZR.6.12"><span class="content">I Darius have decreed it. Let it be carried out with diligence.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Completion and Dedication of the Temple</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="EZR.6.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="EZR.6.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Then, because of the decree King Darius had sent, Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates carried it out with diligence. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="EZR.6.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">So the elders of the Jews continued to build and prosper under the preaching of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah, a descendant of Iddo. They finished building the temple according to the command of the God of Israel and the decrees of Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes, kings of Persia. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="EZR.6.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The temple was completed on the third day of the month Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="EZR.6.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="EZR.6.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">Then the people of Israel&#8212;the priests, the Levites and the rest of the exiles&#8212;celebrated the dedication of the house of God with joy. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="EZR.6.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">For the dedication of this house of God they offered a hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred male lambs and, as a sin offering</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">6:17 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">purification offering</span></span></span><span class="content"> for all Israel, twelve male goats, one for each of the tribes of Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="EZR.6.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">And they installed the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their groups for the service of God at Jerusalem, according to what is written in the Book of Moses.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Passover</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="EZR.6.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="EZR.6.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">On the fourteenth day of the first month, the exiles celebrated the Passover. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="EZR.6.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">The priests and Levites had purified themselves and were all ceremonially clean. The Levites slaughtered the Passover lamb for all the exiles, for their relatives the priests and for themselves. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="EZR.6.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">So the Israelites who had returned from the exile ate it, together with all who had separated themselves from the unclean practices of their Gentile neighbors in order to seek the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, the God of Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="EZR.6.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">For seven days they celebrated with joy the Festival of Unleavened Bread, because the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> had filled them with joy by changing the attitude of the king of Assyria so that he assisted them in the work on the house of God, the God of Israel.</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">7</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Ezra Comes to Jerusalem</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="EZR.7.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">After these things, during the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah, </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="EZR.7.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub, </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="EZR.7.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth, </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="EZR.7.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki, </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="EZR.7.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest&#8212; </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="EZR.7.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">this Ezra came up from Babylon. He was a teacher well versed in the Law of Moses, which the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, the God of Israel, had given. The king had granted him everything he asked, for the hand of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> his God was on him. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="EZR.7.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Some of the Israelites, including priests, Levites, musicians, gatekeepers and temple servants, also came up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="EZR.7.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="EZR.7.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Ezra arrived in Jerusalem in the fifth month of the seventh year of the king. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="EZR.7.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">He had begun his journey from Babylon on the first day of the first month, and he arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month, for the gracious hand of his God was on him. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="EZR.7.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">King Artaxerxes&#8217; Letter to Ezra</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="EZR.7.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="EZR.7.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">This is a copy of the letter King Artaxerxes had given to Ezra the priest, a teacher of the Law, a man learned in matters concerning the commands and decrees of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> for Israel:</span></span></div><div class="pmo"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="EZR.7.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="EZR.7.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Artaxerxes, king of kings,</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="pmo"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="EZR.7.12"><span class="content">To Ezra the priest, teacher of the Law of the God of heaven:</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="pmo"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="EZR.7.12"><span class="content">Greetings.</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="EZR.7.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="EZR.7.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Now I decree that any of the Israelites in my kingdom, including priests and Levites, who volunteer to go to Jerusalem with you, may go. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="EZR.7.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">You are sent by the king and his seven advisers to inquire about Judah and Jerusalem with regard to the Law of your God, which is in your hand. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="EZR.7.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Moreover, you are to take with you the silver and gold that the king and his advisers have freely given to the God of Israel, whose dwelling is in Jerusalem, </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="EZR.7.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">together with all the silver and gold you may obtain from the province of Babylon, as well as the freewill offerings of the people and priests for the temple of their God in Jerusalem. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="EZR.7.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">With this money be sure to buy bulls, rams and male lambs, together with their grain offerings and drink offerings, and sacrifice them on the altar of the temple of your God in Jerusalem.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="EZR.7.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="EZR.7.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">You and your fellow Israelites may then do whatever seems best with the rest of the silver and gold, in accordance with the will of your God. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="EZR.7.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Deliver to the God of Jerusalem all the articles entrusted to you for worship in the temple of your God. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="EZR.7.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">And anything else needed for the temple of your God that you are responsible to supply, you may provide from the royal treasury.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="EZR.7.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="EZR.7.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">Now I, King Artaxerxes, decree that all the treasurers of Trans-Euphrates are to provide with diligence whatever Ezra the priest, the teacher of the Law of the God of heaven, may ask of you&#8212; Get up and roll up your mat.&#8221; Immediately Aeneas got up. </span></span><span class="verse v35" data-usfm="ACT.9.35"><span class="label">35</span><span class="content">All those who lived in Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v35" data-usfm="ACT.9.35"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v36" data-usfm="ACT.9.36"><span class="label">36</span><span class="content">In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. </span></span><span class="verse v37" data-usfm="ACT.9.37"><span class="label">37</span><span class="content">About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. </span></span><span class="verse v38" data-usfm="ACT.9.38"><span class="label">38</span><span class="content">Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, &#8220;Please come at once!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v38" data-usfm="ACT.9.38"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v39" data-usfm="ACT.9.39"><span class="label">39</span><span class="content">Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v39" data-usfm="ACT.9.39"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v40" data-usfm="ACT.9.40"><span class="label">40</span><span class="content">Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, &#8220;Cornelius!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="ACT.10.3"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ACT.10.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Cornelius stared at him in fear. &#8220;What is it, Lord?&#8221; he asked.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ACT.10.4"><span class="content">The angel answered, &#8220;Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ACT.10.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ACT.10.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ACT.10.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ACT.10.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ACT.10.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Peter&#8217;s Vision</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ACT.10.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="ACT.10.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ACT.10.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.10.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ACT.10.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.10.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Then a voice told him, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Get up, Peter.
