In John 17:11-23, Jesus prayed for the ministry of the disciples as he sent them into the world bearing his message. What does his prayer reveal about the various challenges they will encounter as they continue his mission to the world? Why, in particular, did he pray that they would be brought to “complete unity” (17:23)? What is the connection between their unity, message, and mission?

The Gospels reveal that Jesus had a rich and extensive prayer life. His longest recorded prayer, found in John 17, gives us a front-row seat to the nature and quality of Jesus’ conversation with his Father and the role of prayer in his care for the disciples.
