Reflecting on the last week: What does it mean to fear the LORD? Have you ever driven to the mountains and found yourself overwhelmed by their beauty, height and majesty? That is fear. Have you ever heard a speech or sermon that touched your exact life situation so precisely that you felt deeply transformed? That is fear. Have you heard a piece of music that made your hairs stand on end? That is fear. To fear the Lord is to count his opinion greater than all others. It is to be in awe of his beauty and grace. It is to be humbly submitted to his glory as king. It is to put him first in all categories of life. Proverbs here reminds us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Why? Because we live in God’s reality. If we try to break it, it breaks us. But if we live in line with reality, our lives flourish. Knowing and fearing him allows us to live skillfully in his reality—and that is the beginning of all wisdom.
