Reflecting on the last week: Psalm 1 sets two paths starkly before us. One is the path of blessing (life, love, justice and mercy). The other is the path of wickedness (redefining good and evil for our own benefit). One path is rooted like a healthy tree. The other path is like dust blowing in the wind. One leads to a fruitful life. The other to a futile life. The person on the foolish path starts out walking, then standing, and then finally sitting. He is stuck. Immobile. It is a dark warning that the longer we remain on the path of hard-hearted disobedience the more difficult it is for us to leave. Conversely, it is wonderful news that the path to blessing does not begin with some unobtainable obstacle. It begins with something anyone can do: meditating on God’s word. We easily take this Bible for granted, but the Psalmist reminds us that it is a life-giving gift. If we find opening it difficult, we need only remember that God gives wisdom and grace to those who ask. So ask for his help to open his word. To hear his word. To delight in his word. To meditate on his word. To be transformed by his word.
